Without being able to see exactly what you are talking about, it would be my guess that you are describing the difference between the old coaxial cable and the new fiber optic line. The two technologies are not compatible. The new fiber optic line needs a box (ONT) to translate between fiber optic signals and coaxial, ethernet and phone line signals. The old line was probably left alone in case you or a future owner wanted to return to standard cable. However, if damage was done to your siding during the install, that is definitely something you need to settle with Verizon directly.
