Fast forward long distance while recording, no chapters.

How do you fast forward while recording long program like football game? Often I want to get to some later position in an on going recording, last night I had to FF 2.5 hours at 8x, took more than 2 minutes. Directv had tic marks throughout the ongoing recording that you could snap to.

Chapters are fine but do not exist while recording is on going.
